Abstract
Objective : To determine if the reduced length of transurethral foley catherterization
from 3 days to 1 day would decrease an incidence of urinary tract infections without
voiding problem.
Methods : Sixty postmenopausal women who had not received hormone replacement
therapy undergoing Burch operation were randomly assigned to either 1 or 3 days'
catheterization group. No antibiotics were used in both groups. After removal of foley
catheterization, the incidence of urinary tract infection and voiding problem were
obtained.
Results : Five(20.0%) patients in the 1-day group and twelve(34.3%) in the 3-day
group were diagnosed for having urinary tract infection. Delayed voiding occurred in
7(28.0%) and 7(20.0%) patients respectively. No statistically significant differences were
found between groups.
Conclusion : These results suggest that the length of catheterization may be reduced
to 1 day and it would lead to fewer infections but more voiding problem. If a
transurethral catheter is to be used, the two regimens do not make difference in
incidence of both complication.
